Radio Rootz started in one New York city public school in Harlem back in 2000. Teaching 6th-8th graders at Crossroads Middle School the art of radio production, Rootz reporters were in demand.

Our youth reportage has been sought out locally and nationally, from the BBC world service to Pacifica radio stations nationwide! Carlton Taylor, an 8th grader at Crossroads, was hired back in 2001 to produce radio for the BBC program "Outlook". Check out his work:

Rootz youth have created compelling and award-winning radio which has not only been aired on radio stations nationwide but has also been used by community based groups to educate on issues of critical importance to the community. Our work is not just about having a voice, it's about young people actively working to better ourselves and our communities ... and our mic is our weapon!

With controversy raging over a North Carolina program that pays teens $1 per each day they don't get pregnant, teens from a NYC high school in Brooklyn decided  to weigh in ~ dramatically!‬

This radio drama begins with the daunting facts that ring and repeat in a young teen mother's head.  How can teen parents choose between raising their child and pursuing school?  The students from Brooklyn Theatre Arts High School researched, wrote, produced, and acted in this radio drama.‬

Michael Florencia

Hi, I’m Michael Florencia  I was born  in  Guayaquil, Ecuador on May 18 1990.  I graduated High School in my country and now I’m going to high school and learning English in USA.  One of my passions is playing the guitar.  I’m a member of 2 bands.
My  goal is to learn English very well and attend college.  I would like to become a sound engineer and own my own record label.  I had a great experience this year at Radio Rootz and hope to continue with them for many years.

Miguel Ordonez

I was born in the year 1990 in Ecuador.  Living in Ecuador was fun.  I had a lot of friends and family, but I decided to move the United States 2007.  Here, I live with my aunts and older brother.  I currently attend Manhattan Compressive High School.  One of the things I enjoyed most this school year was participating in Radio Rootz, where I got the chance to interview people about different topics.  I also got to go to different events like the Grassroots Media conference and meet a lot of people. My future plans are to be an English teacher.

Wilmer Aucancela

I’m Wilmer Aucancela.  I was born in Ecuador.  I moved to New York in 2007 to continue my studies.  My life completely changed when I moved here.  Back home, education was just simply education. Now, I appreciate learning new things. I   currently attend Manhattan Comprehensive Night and Day High School.  This year, I took Radio Rootz classes. I like Radio Rootz  because I get the chance to practice my English and get to know myself a little more. I feel more important, as a person in my new home New York City.
